Democrats Work to Improve Lives

It's time to go on the offensive when it comes to government and politics. The Democratic party is working to make all people's lives better. The Republican party has become the party of culture wars and performative extremism.

Each week we highlight one FACT that you can share with non-believers. It's up to us to change the GOP misinformation narrative!

Fact!

Republicans are attacking women's reproductive freedoms, including the right to safe abortions, birth control, and IVF. Trump takes credit for overturning Roe, said he would punish women who get an abortion, supports states' tracking women's pregnancies and supports prosecuting people who help with abortions.

The Biden-Harris administration has taken action to protect abortion rights and fight for reproductive freedoms, including access to FDA-approved medication abortion, affordable contraception, and accurate information.

  • More than 20 states have an abortion ban
  • Extreme 6-week abortion ban went into effect in Florida on May 1, 2024, affecting women in the entire southeast
  • Nearly half of all U.S. reproductive-age women live in states where abortion is either completely banned or banned after 6 weeks
  • 1 in 3 women in the US aged 15-44 live under an abortion ban
  • Abortion bans negatively impact women of color at a disproportional rate

Biden-Harris announces the most impactful background checks ruling on gun sales since the Brady Bill passed in 1993.

Timeline:
  • June 2022: bipartisan Safer Communities Act passed
  • August 2023: Biden signed EO directing the DOJ to clarify the Act in order to get as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation
  • May 2024: new rule goes into effect
The rule will close the gun show loophole. Anyone who sells guns for a profit will now be required to be a licensed dealer and do a background check, even at gun shows and through online marketplaces. Will affect about 20,000 dealers and tens of thousands of gun sales, and will help to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and felons.

Earth Day Fact!

Biden has done more to combat the climate emergency and address environmental justice than any other administration, including rolling back many of Trump's harmful policies.

There is more to do, including a recommitment to reducing single use plastics and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, but a second term for Biden would allow him to continue to do impactful climate work. "This president is a president that young people can push." —Anderson Clayton, the youngest Democratic state party chair (NC)

A Trump presidency and Republican control would be disastrous to the future of our planet, as they would attempt to dismantle all the progress Biden has made.

FACT!
"President Biden has done more than any president to tackle climate change. Voters don’t seem to know it." NY Times

Here are some things Biden-Harris administration has done to invest in our planet:
  • $370 billion to reduce carbon pollution by boosting the production of wind, solar and other renewable energy through IRA
  • Millions of dollars in tax credits to homeowners and consumers to move away from fossil fuels through IRA
  • Funding for clean energy infrastructure to provide support against the impact of climate change through BIL
  • $3 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund. The GCF is the largest international fund dedicated to supporting developing countries to tackle climate change
  • Created over 210,000 clean energy jobs in the last 15 months, with an additional 1.5 million jobs projected to be created over the next decade
  • Full details here
While we should absolutely continue to push Biden-Harris to prioritize the climate, we should also spread the message that a Trump presidency would be disastrous for the future of our planet and remind people of the things Trump has said he will do to dismantle all of Biden's efforts to cut our emissions in half by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050.

Here are some things Trump has said about clean energy and what he will do as President:
  • Calls renewable energy a "scam business"
  • Vows to "drill, baby, drill"
  • Withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement (again)
  • Repeal “crooked Joe Biden’s insane electric vehicle mandate”
  • Approve a glut of new gas export terminals currently paused by Biden
  • “End [Biden's] war on American energy”

FACT!

A citizen-led petition initiative in Florida is one step closer to getting onto the November ballot. If it does, Floridians will have the opportunity to vote to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. This is hugely important for the rights and freedoms of Floridians, the 3rd most populous state. Equally important, Florida is a safe haven for women seeking abortions across the south east, as the surrounding states have abortion bans in place, so the results will have a far reaching impact on women's access to reproductive care.

Additional facts about abortion access in Florida:
  • 4th highest number of abortions of all states
  • Biggest state increase in number of abortions post Dobbs
  • 90% of abortions occurred before the end of the 9th week

The majority of Americans have a pessimistic view of our economy, despite data that shows the economy is strong.

"By many measures — unemployment, inflation, the stock market — the economy is strong. Yet only 23 percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the right direction." —Steve Rattner, NY Times Opinion

For example:
  • 73% think inflation is higher than a year ago. However, inflation has fallen from 7.7% in Oct 2022 to 3.2% in Oct 2023.
  • 51% think unemployment is higher today than it was 30 years ago. In fact, unemployment rate was 6.5% at the end of 1993, compared to the current rate of 3.7%.

The House GOP wants to offset emergency aid to Israel with funding cuts to the IRS. The only problem: cutting IRS funds increases the deficit.

  • For every $1 the US spends auditing someone in the top 0.1%, it gets back $6.30

While it is good news that Congress avoided a government shutdown, we should never have been in this position in the first place. This was a crisis manufactured by the extremist Republicans in the House. President Biden and Speaker McCarthy had already negotiated a budget agreement in June. McCarthy went back on his word and it was the House Democrats who bailed us out.

A shutdown would hurt small businesses, would delay paychecks to our service members, disrupt social security payments to seniors and those with disabilities, cause TSA and air traffic controller shortages, and more.
